After the World Championships is before the European Championships: this year, the European Road Championships will take place one week after the World Championships in Rwanda. The races in the Rhone Valley in the south of France (1 to 5 October 2025) will feature a top-class line-up. The German Cycling Federation will be sending a large squad with good chances on the classic-like routes.

Liane Lippert will lead the German squad. In the women's road race, she will be supported by the German champion Franziska Koch, Tour stage winner Ricarda Bauernfeind and the former U23 world champion in the individual time trial, Antonia Niedermaier. German champion Georg Zimmermann leads the men's race. Lennard Kämna is making his comeback in the national jersey. The athletes from German Cycling should have a chance of winning a medal, especially with Lippert in the women's road race and the mixed relay.

This year's European Championships are particularly high-calibre. The men's star line-up includes Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, Juan Ayuso and João Almeida as well as Filippo Ganna (Italy) in the individual time trial. In the women's race, Tour winners Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, Demi Vollering and Katarzyna Niewiadoma will be vying for the title. In the individual time trial, Swiss world champion Marlen Reusser is the top favourite.

Too difficult for the defending champions

The defending champions Tim Merlier (Belgium) and Lorena Wiebes (Netherlands) are expected to hand in their European champion jerseys without a fight. They are not in the line-up for their countries. Sprint specialists have little chance due to the difficult climbs on the edge of the Massif Central around the Valence conurbation. You can find the preview of the routes here here.
