Munich will be the venue for next year's European Championships. The organising committee has now announced the routes for the road races.

Nine European Championships will be held in and around Munich as part of the largest multi-sport event since the 1972 Olympic Games. More than 4,400 athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze in 158 medal events in the Bavarian capital from 11-21 August 2022. 30 titles are on the programme as part of the European Cycling Championships. 22 medal decisions will be held in track cycling, two each in mountain bike cross-country and BMX freestyle and four in the European road cycling championships. Women and men will compete in both the road race and the time trial.

The women's elite road race starts in Landsberg. After a short loop through the town centre, the 128-kilometre route takes the starters past the southern ends of Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg via Wolfratshausen and the Wolfratshauser Berg on the B11 country road to Munich. The athletes have to overcome 690 metres in altitude before they arrive at the foot of the Friedenengel after 98 kilometres along the Isar, where the final city laps begin.

The men's race begins with an opening lap through the pedestrianised area of Murnau. From the Blue Land, the 208-kilometre route then leads over the Kesselberg along the Walchensee and on through Jachenau, Lenggries, Bad Tölz, Geretsried and Eurasburg to Münsing. The route then takes the Olympic Road to the Bavarian capital. After 139 kilometres and 1,050 metres of ascent, the men's field turns onto the finishing circuit at the Friedensengel.

The final showdown of the two road bike races takes place on a technically demanding 13-kilometre circuit through Munich city centre. The finish laps begin with a lap around the Friedensengel and continue along Prinzregentenstraße and Ludwigstraße around the Siegestor and on towards Theresienwiese. Once the field has passed the Bavaria, it heads back through the city centre to the Siegestor. After two complete laps in the women's race and five in the men's race, all eyes turn to Ludwigstraße and the finish line at Odeonsplatz.

The crowning of Europe's best time trialist will take place in Fürstenfeldbruck. The 24-kilometre time trial starts and finishes at the former Cistercian monastery in Fürstenfeld. From there, the route first leads to Biburg and Schöngeising. The course continues along the country road to Landsberied and via Jesenwang back to the baroque monastery complex.
