Many were wearing yellow jerseys or waving Danish flags when the 26-year-old arrived at the town hall square in the afternoon, Danish radio station DR reported. The police tweeted photos showing a packed City Hall Square. Traffic was being diverted due to the large crowds, the statement said.
In his acceptance speech at City Hall, Vingegaard emphasised how important it was to believe in yourself. He wanted to inspire children throughout Denmark to believe in themselves too, he said according to DR. His reception was attended by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, among others. On Thursday, the cycling champion will continue his celebrations in his home town of Glyngøre in western Jutland. According to the news agency Ritzau, up to 25,000 people are expected there.
