Monaco (dpa) - A few days after his victory at the Giro d'Italia, Colombian professional cyclist Egan Bernal has tested positive for the coronavirus.

He has mild symptoms but is otherwise in good health, his team Ineos Grenadiers announced. The 2019 Tour de France winner won the 104th edition of the Tour of Italy on 30 May.

The climbing specialist actually wanted to travel to his home country of Colombia to celebrate his victory there. His infection was discovered during the mandatory test before the flight, the Colombian Cycling Federation announced. Bernal's girlfriend María Fernanda Gutiérrez also tested positive. Both then went into quarantine at their home in Monaco.

Bernal now wants to travel to Colombia as soon as the quarantine period is over to celebrate his triumph at the Giro d'Italia together with his fans, according to the statement from his team Ineos Grenadiers.
