Will the women's hourly world record soon be broken again? Ellen van Dijk from the Netherlands wants to beat the previous record from last year.

Current hourly world record from 2021

On 23 May 2022, the reigning individual time trial world champion Ellen van Dijk from Team Trek-Segafredo wants to make history at the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen (Switzerland) and improve the UCI hourly world record. The current record is 48.405 kilometres, set by Great Britain's Joscelin Lowden on 30 September 2021 - also on the track in Grenchen.

Where will van Dijk's world hour record attempt be broadcast?

Cycling fans can follow the event live on 23 May from 17:00 (CEST). Trek offers a livestream here. The commentators are Lizzie Deignan (among others Winner of Paris-Roubaix Femmes) and Jens Voigt (himself a former world hour record holder).

Attending the event at the Velodrome in Grenchen is free for everyone. There is also the opportunity for spectators and participants to do something for a good cause.

Together with the Swiss charity organisation Greenhope, Trek-Segafredo is collecting donations to help children with cancer and their families. The total amount raised during the event will be doubled by Trek at the end.

Van Dijk: "Exciting and frightening at the same time"

"It's been a dream of mine for a very long time. The world hour record is something I've always said I wanted to tackle one day. And now that day is finally here. I have butterflies in my stomach when I think about it. It's a mixture of excitement and nervousness, which is completely normal. With big challenges, you're always on the edge of the precipice, and that's a huge challenge. So it will be exciting and scary at the same time," says van Dijk on the Trek-Segafredo homepage.

"We talked about the world hour record when I joined Trek-Segafredo four years ago, but I knew it wasn't the right time. I was still struggling with injuries and knew I wouldn't be at my best. But now I know that I'm ready to really attack the current record," the Dutchwoman continues.
