Van der Poel's lead was 1:20 minutes and his victory was unchallenged. The world champion is particularly versatile and, in addition to his cross successes, is also successful on the mountain bike and on the road. "I had one of the best days of my season and I'm happy that it was enough," said van der Poel.
Previously, three Dutch women had won all the medals in the women's race. Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado won the cross-country race just ahead of her team-mate Annemarie Worst, while Lucinda Brand completed the triple victory for the superior Oranje team. Elisabeth Brandau was the only German starter to reach the finish line after just under 16 kilometres, almost four and a half minutes behind in 21st place. Sascha Weber was the best German in the men's race in 19th place. The German champion Marcel Meisen dropped out early.
