On Tuesday, the Danish defending champion Vingegaard won the individual time trial with a sensational lead of 1:38 minutes over his Slovenian rival Pogacar and significantly widened the gap in the overall standings. He distanced his third-placed team-mate Wout van Aert by an incredible 2:51 minutes. Some experts found it difficult to categorise Vingegaard's explosive performance.
Both the 26-year-old and Pogacar (24) had recently shown understanding for doubts about their ability to perform. "I understand these questions. All I can say is: I'm not taking anything," said Vingegaard. From 1998 to 2009, various doping scandals in cycling made a lot of negative headlines.
