After the fatal accident of professional cyclist Gino Mäder the Graubünden public prosecutor's office dropped the criminal proceedings. The investigators came to the conclusion that neither the organisers of the Tour de Suisse nor Magnus Sheffield, who also crashed, were at fault.
According to the public prosecutor's office, the fact that the race organisers had not classified the bend on the descent from the Albula Pass, where Mäder crashed, as "requiring a warning" was not objectionable. The authorities stated that the decision was not yet legally binding.
Mäder crashed on the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse on 15 June and died the following day from his serious head injuries at the age of 26. The public prosecutor's office initiated proceedings immediately after the accident, as a result of which Mäder's body and his bike were examined and several people were questioned.
Sheffield had been in another group of riders and crashed in the same place before Mäder. The 21-year-old suffered bruising and a head injury. He returned to racing at the Tour of Britain at the beginning of September.
