Ahead of the final round in Heilbronn, Isaac del Toro has reclaimed the overall lead. Will the Mexican’s lead be enough to secure overall victory on the Germany Tour?

Top favourite Isaac del Toro has reclaimed the blue jersey as overall leader after finishing second on the queen stage of the Deutschland Tour. The Mexican professional cyclist finished behind Italian Giulio Pellizzari of the German Red Bull team on the day’s 170.8-kilometre stage from Herxheim to Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate. The best-placed German was Florian Stork in tenth place. The peloton had to tackle around 3,000 metres of climbing as they rode through the Palatinate Forest.

The 22-year-old del Toro launched an attack from the peloton some 35 kilometres from the finish and, together with Pellizzari, caught up with the race leader, Nelson Oliveira from Portugal. Oliveira was later unable to keep up with the pair. The Italian then came out on top in the final sprint.

Blue jersey for del Toro

Del Toro, a team-mate of superstar Tadej Pogacar – who is not competing in the Deutschland Tour – now has the best chance of winning the Deutschland Tour on Sunday. He leads the general classification by 52 seconds ahead of France’s Louis Barré. Switzerland’s Marc Hirschi is currently third.

The final stage of the five-day tour will take place on Sunday around Heilbronn. The winner will be decided on the 156.5-kilometre undulating route, which starts and finishes in Heilbronn.
