Gianni Moscon leaves Astana Qazaqstan Team. The Italian will now ride for the Belgian team Soudal - Quick Step.

The versatile Italian Gianni Moscon has reached an agreement with the "Wolfpack" (nickname of Soudal - Quick Step) for the coming 2024 season. Moscon has been a professional since 2016 and comes from the Astana Qazaqstan team. In 2014, he became Italian U23 road race champion at the age of 20 and finished fourth in the U23 race at the Road World Championships. In 2017, he won the bronze medal in the team time trial at the Road World Championships. Moscon celebrated his greatest success on the UCI World Tour in 2018 when he won the Tour of Guangxi.

At Paris-Roubaix 2021, Moscon, then riding for Ineos, was on course for victory for a long time. However, a puncture and a crash thwarted his plans. In 2023, however, things did not go well for the 29-year-old at all: not a single top 10 finish to his name.

Gianni Moscon on transfer to Soudal - Quick Step

Moscon wants to get back on the road to success with his new employer. "When I turned pro, one of my goals was to ride for Soudal - Quick Step one day and I'm happy that this will be the case next season. Coming here after two difficult years in my career means a lot to me and I would like to thank everyone who has put their trust in me," Moscon is quoted as saying in the Soudal - Quick Step press release.

"I love the classics, I love the way this team races and I can't wait to be part of this group. I always give my best and commit to what I do on the bike. Knowing that I will be part of the Wolfpack makes me very excited," continues Gianni Moscon.

Gianni Moscon often attracts negative attention

Moscon has not only made sporting headlines during his career. He has also attracted attention due to various disciplinary problems. At the 2017 Tour de Romandie, he racially insulted Kevin Reza (then with FDJ). Moscon was excluded from the 2018 Tour de France after beating the Frenchman Elie Gesbert (Fortuneo-Samsic). Around a year and a half later, he threw a racing bike against the upper body of Belgian Jens Debusschere (B&B Hotels - Vital Concept) in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne after a mass crash and was disqualified.

Patrick Lefevere, CEO of Soudal - Quick Step, commented on the signing of Moscon as follows: "We have known Gianni for a long time, since he was still an amateur. He is a very talented rider who has made a name for himself since his U23 days with strong results in races such as the Piccolo Giro di Lombardia and the Tour de l'Avenir, and has also shown time and again what he is capable of at the professional level. He will be an important addition to our squad for next season and we are confident that he can show some great things in our 2024 team."

Maik Schröder was born in East Westphalia and prefers to ride through the countryside on his gravel bike. The tour can also include a culinary stop to fortify himself for the next few kilometres. Even if there are few metres of altitude to conquer in the flatlands, he has the ambitious goal of completing a Transalp one day. As online editor, he is responsible for creating digital editorial content such as news reports, new products and event coverage.
