British sprint star Mark Cavendish took his 16th stage win in total at the Giro d'Italia.
The former world champion won the third stage over 201 kilometres from Kaposvar to Balatonfüred ahead of Frenchman Arnaud Demare and Colombian Fernando Gaviria. The best German in the bunch sprint was Phil Bauhaus in tenth place.
The overall winner's pink jersey continues to be worn by Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, who won the opening stage and also took second place in the time trial on Saturday. His lead in the overall standings over Britain's Simon Yates is eleven seconds. Emanuel Buchmann, who is aiming for a top place in the final standings, is 1:08 minutes behind after his crash on Saturday.
After three stages in Hungary, the Giro returns to Italy. After the rest day on the fourth stage on Tuesday, the first mountain finish over 172 kilometres up Mount Etna awaits. The Tour of Italy ends on 29 May in Verona.
