After 205.6 kilometres in the Hanseatic city, the 27-year-old professional cyclist took victory by a wafer-thin margin in a sprint ahead of Dutchman Danny van Poppel. Pedersen had previously caught up with a three-man breakaway group led by Nils Politt from Cologne virtually single-handedly. Third place went to the Italian Elia Viviani, who had already won three times in Hamburg.
"I came out of the tour in good shape and am trying to maintain my form for as long as possible. I want to win more. We had nothing to lose today," said Pedersen, who had just won the Tour of Denmark on Saturday.
In addition to Politt, Pascal Ackermann and Georg Zimmermann also took part in the elite race, which has been held since 1996. The German professional cyclist Michel Heßmann was actually also listed as a participant. However, the 22-year-old from Münster was suspended by his team Jumbo-Visma after testing positive for doping. For some of the pros, Sunday was also the dress rehearsal before the Tour of Germany, which starts on Wednesday.
