The Dane from Jumbo-Visma single-handedly took victory on the fifth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine 2023, also taking the yellow jersey from his compatriot Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates). Vingegaard won after 191.1 kilometres from Cormoranche-sur-Saone to Salins-les-Bains with a lead of 31 seconds over former world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal - Quick Step) from France.
With 14 kilometres to go, Vingegaard broke away from the rest of the peloton with an attack on the Cote de Thesy, a second category climb, and did not let the advantage slip away on the descent. The previous day, the 26-year-old had missed out on the leader's jersey with his second place in the individual time trial.
For Vingegaard, who is now 1:10 minutes ahead of Ben O'Connor (AG2R-Citroën Team), it was his ninth win of the season. Former Tour fourth-placed Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) lost 1:02 minutes and is in 27th place overall.
The Tour of the Dauphine continues on Friday with the sixth stage over 170.2 kilometres from Nantua to Crest-Voland. The Tour dress rehearsal ends on Sunday in Grenoble.
