The Basque rider Gorka Izaguirre, who won the time trial on Saturday and took the yellow jersey, finished second overall, 12 seconds behind Lopez. The Colombian's success was rounded off on the final day by his compatriot Jarlinson Pantano, who won the final stage in Davos, which was shortened to 57 kilometres, in a sprint ahead of the Russian Sergei Chernetsky. Four-time time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland did not compete in the final stage.
Due to the threat of snowfall and low temperatures, the ninth and final stage was shortened from 117 to 57.3 kilometres. The professional cyclists and their teams welcomed the race organisers' decision. The Albula Pass was removed from the programme, while the Flüela Pass, which is also around 2300 metres high, was ridden in freezing rain.
"The weather forecast for today was so bad that we had to expect continuous rain and snowfall on the mountain passes," said Tour Director Olivier Senn, explaining the decision to delay the start to 1600 hrs.
Just 14 days before the start of the Tour de France, the German riders hardly played a role in the 80th Tour of Switzerland. Berlin's Simon Geschke, who won a Tour stage last year, appeared in the front groups a few times on the climbs in the last few days.
