Painful victory: Remco Evenepoel fell after crossing the finish line on stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana 2023 and suffered a laceration.

Everything initially went according to plan for Remco Evenepoel on stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana - until he crossed the finish line. The time trial world champion threw his arms up in celebration after clinching victory, but a few seconds later he was sitting on the ground covered in blood.

The 23-year-old collided with a woman who was in the finish area. Evenepoel was then treated by a carer from his team Soudal - Quick Step. Shortly afterwards he stood up and withdrew. "Something to do with safety again. That was only 50 metres behind the finish line. For the third time in a row. That annoys me a bit," said the superstar with a clearly visible cut over his right eye in the winner's interview.

The Belgian was all the more pleased about his victory on stage 3 of the Vuelta a Espana 2023. "Today we had the perfect tactic: be patient and wait. We rode at the front on the last descent. That was a good decision. I felt very good on the final climb and set up a long sprint. I'm super happy about this victory," said Evenepoel.
