The Dane Jonas Vingegaard reaches the next milestone: in Rome he celebrates his first triumph at the Giro. He joins a select circle.

Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard has won the 109th edition of the Giro d'Italia. The 29-year-old is now one of eight professionals to win all three grand tours. Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, and last year he celebrated overall victory at the Spanish Vuelta.

Vingegaard now belongs to the illustrious circle of Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome, who have won each of the three tours at least once.

Vingegaard soon back at the Tour de France

After the final 21st stage in Rome, Vingegaard has a clear lead in the overall standings of 5:22 minutes over the Austrian Felix Gall and 6:25 minutes over the Australian Jai Hindley from the German Red Bull team. Italian Jonathan Milan took the day's victory in the sprint and celebrated a home win.

Vingegaard's great long-term rival Tadej Pogacar did not take part in this year's Tour of Italy. The two exceptional riders will meet again at the 113th edition of the Tour de France starting on 4 July at the Grand Départ in Barcelona. Last year's German Tour bronze medallist Florian Lipowitz will also be at the start.
