Michal Kwiatkowski has won the Clásica Jaén 2025. The former world champion came out on top in the one-day race in Spain. Team UAE Team Emirates - XRG, on the other hand, was unlucky at the decisive moment, as was Kwiatkowski's team-mate Egan Bernal.

Third win of the season for the INEOS Grenadiers team. After Egan Bernal's two successes in the Colombian championships in the individual time trial and the road race, Michal Kwiatkowski won the Clásica Jaén in Spain on Monday. Bernal himself put in a strong performance, but fell in the final and was subsequently taken to hospital. There he was diagnosed with a broken collarbone, as his team announced. It is not yet clear how long the Colombian will be out for.

In the fourth edition of the race, which leads over 169.2 kilometres around Úbeda and numerous gravel passages, Kwiatkowski, 2014 Road World Champion, came out on top ahead of Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) and Ibon Ruiz (Equipo Kern Pharma). Kwiatkowski had broken away from the group of favourites 65 kilometres before the finish, together with Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates - XRG).

The American was unlucky in the finale when he suffered a defect on his Colnago racing machine 14 kilometres before the finish and thus lost all chances of victory. UAE tried to send a rider from the chasing group to the front with Isaac del Toro, but the Mexican was unable to catch Kwiatkowski.

After the start, a group of seven riders broke away from the peloton with Ibon Ruiz (Equipo Kern Pharma), Edgar Curto, Ricard Fitó (both Illes Balears Araby), Clément Alleno (Burgos Burpellet BH), Yenti Vandevelde (Team Flanders - Baloise), Julen Arriola-Bengoa (Caja Rural - Seguros RGA) and Adrian Benito Gonzalez (Extremadura - Pebetero). Of these seven pros, Ruiz stayed in front the longest and would later also achieve a top result with third place.

There were numerous attacks in the peloton on the gravel sectors. Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) and Wout Van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) were on the offensive. The decisive attack, however, came from Kwiatkowski and McNulty on an asphalt section 65 kilometres from the finish. Little by little, they caught up with the rest of the breakaway group until only Ruiz was left as a companion. Behind them, van Aert put himself at the service of his team-mate Ben Tulett and tried to catch up with the leaders again, but was unsuccessful. The race-deciding scene occurred in a gravel sector around 14 kilometres before the finish when McNulty broke down. Kwiatkowski moved on with Ruiz and caught the Spaniard a little later.

Although UAE Team Emirates - XRG allowed Isaac del Toro to attack from the chasing group, the gap to the front was too big for the Mexican. He was no longer able to catch Kwiatkowski. The Pole celebrated his 32nd professional victory.
