The German track cycling stars came away empty-handed on the third day of the World Championships in Shanghai. A day after his silver medal in the keirin, Maximilian Dörnbach finished sixth in the 1,000-metre time trial, missing out on a medal. Moritz Augenstein also missed out on a medal in the points race and had to settle for sixth place as well. This means the German team still has three medals to its name.
The highlight was the world record set by sprint ace Jonathan Milan in the 4,000-metre individual pursuit. The two-time Tour de France stage winner from Italy had already beaten his own record in the qualifying round with a time of 3:58.850 minutes and went on to win gold in the final against Denmark’s Fredrik Madsen. The German riders played no part in the event.
Dörnbach was a good 1.8 seconds slower than the Dutch winner, Jeffrey Hoogland, over the 1,000-metre distance, clocking a time of 1:00.552 minutes. Just behind Dörnbach, Benjamin Boos (1:00.652) finished in seventh place.
Augenstein, who was, after all, last year’s scratch race world champion and the reigning European champion in the Madison, was unable to make an impact in the 40-kilometre points race. With nine points, he stood no chance; gold went to Britain’s Mark Stewart (35), ahead of the French Olympic omnium champion Benjamin Thomas (28) and Portugal’s Carlos Salgueiro (27).
