For professional cyclist Emanuel Buchmann, getting through the Giro d'Italia "without a crash or illness" would be a first success.
After the former Tour de France fourth-placed rider has been repeatedly set back by crashes and illnesses in recent years, he now wants to finish a tour without any problems.
"The years weren't completely lost either. I also learnt a lot over the two years. But there wasn't much in terms of results. I normally still have a few good years ahead of me. I'm still motivated. Now I should get through without bad luck. Then I can be satisfied," said Buchmann at a press conference one day before the start in Budapest. Together with Wilco Kelderman (Netherlands) and Jai Hindley (Australia), the rider from the Allgäu will start the race as equal captain.
Lennard Kämna enjoys a special role and will also be looking for his chance to win on the day. "If I'm in a breakaway group, there are always opportunities to win. I have set myself the goal of chasing stages," said the former Tour de France stage winner, who has "a lot of desire" for the Giro. It is still unclear whether Kämna will also take part in the Tour. In Buchmann's case, it's more likely that he will ride the Tour of Spain.
