After winning bronze at the World Championships, the German mixed relay team also finished on the podium at the European Cycling Championships in Drenthe, Netherlands.
After 38.6 kilometres on the course in Emmen, the German sextet took third place behind winners France and Italy. This was the fourth time the German team had won a medal at the fourth edition of the still young competition.
Miguel Heidemann, Jannik Steimle and Max Walscheid laid the foundations for a successful race with the third-best time on the first lap. Lisa Klein, Franziska Koch and Mieke Kröger then saved the medal with a lead of 1.45 seconds over the hosts, the Netherlands. "We put in a good performance. It was an ideal course for me. I like flat courses like this," said Walscheid.
Earlier, the German junior relay team had already won silver in the mixed event. They could even have won gold had the German juniors not crashed twice. In the end, Italy won the title. Overall, it was Germany's fourth precious metal at the championships in the Netherlands. On Wednesday, world champion Antonia Niedermaier took silver in the U23 class in the individual time trial and Hannah Kunz won bronze in the junior class.
The road races will then take place from Friday at the title fights. The women's elite race will take place on Saturday, followed a day later by the men's race with John Degenkolb in the team.
