His team Ineos Grenadiers announced that the 34-year-old top favourite from Wales would no longer compete in the 140-kilometre stage between Catania and Villafranca Tirrena. After further examinations, the 2018 Tour de France winner was diagnosed with a pelvic fracture.
"It's so frustrating. I've put so much work into this race," Thomas is quoted as saying in the statement from his racing team. "I did everything I could and felt in just as good, if not better, shape than when I won the Tour."
Thomas had already crashed heavily in the neutral zone on Monday and had lost more than twelve minutes to the day's winner Jonathan Caicedo from Ecuador on the first mountain stage.
