The 17-year-old was only 12.62 seconds slower than the victorious Italian Antonio Tiberi over the 27.6 kilometres with start and finish in Harrogate in 38:40 minutes. Second place went to the Dutchman Enzo Leijnse (+7.79). Michel Heßmann (Billerbeck) finished 27.76 seconds back in fifth place.
There were no German medals in the junior women's event. Paula Leonhardt (Berlin) and Lucy Mayrhofer (Dusslingen) finished in 17th and 21st place respectively after Russia's Aigul Gareyeva won.
The World Championships will continue with the U23 men's and women's individual time trials.
