In a break-in at Shimano in the Netherlands, racing bikes belonging to Mathieu van der Poel, Egan Bernal and other top riders were stolen. The damage amounts to 100,000 euros.

Six unique and irreplaceable bicycles were stolen from the Shimano Experience Centre in Valkenburg. The theft took place during the night from Thursday to Friday last week.

Racing bike theft with an estimated value of 100,000 euros

On Friday morning, the employees realised that the locks had been broken and the bikes were gone. The stolen bikes include a Canyon Aeroad in rainbow colours, which Mathieu van der Poel rode in Liège-Bastogne-Liège this year. A Pinarello Dogma F12 X-Light from Egan Bernal was stolen, on which he rode the 2021 Vuelta a Espana with a yellow and pink stripe as a reference to his Tour and Giro victory. The thieves also took a Specialized S-Works Venge, which Peter Sagan rode at the 2020 Tour.

Other bikes: a Scott Foil in the colours of the dsm-firmenich Post NL team from sprinter Fabio Jakobsen, a Specialized S-Works, on which Julian Alaphilippe rode eleven days in yellow at the 2019 Tour, and a white Merida Reacto, on which Matej Mohoric won his Tour stage last year.

The six bikes were on loan from the respective World Tour teams and were part of a museum exhibition in the Experience Centre. The estimated value of the entire theft is 100,000 euros. However, experts believe that the historical value of these bikes is much higher. Shimano is co-operating with the local police authorities in the investigation.
