Campo Felice (dpa) - Top favourite Egan Bernal has won the second mountain stage of the 104th Giro d'Italia and taken the lead in the overall standings.

The Colombian cyclist soloed to victory on the gravel track of the Campo Felice ski area ahead of the Italian Giulio Ciccone and the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov. Emanuel Buchmann performed well and finished 13th, twelve seconds behind.

In the overall standings, the former Tour winner Bernal is 15 seconds ahead of the great Belgian hope Remco Evenepoel. Buchmann remains in 15th place in the classification and is 1:46 minutes behind Bernal.

On Saturday, Nikias Arndt achieved the best German result so far in the 104th Tour of Italy. The 29-year-old from Team DSM rode to third place as part of a breakaway group on stage 8. Frenchman Victor Lafay had secured the stage win in Guardia Sanframondi.

Before the first rest day, the sprinters can once again put themselves in the limelight on Monday. The only 139 kilometres from L'Aquila to Foligno present hardly any difficulties. However, Caleb Ewan, the best sprinter so far, will be missing after the two-time stage winner had to abandon the race on Saturday due to knee pain.
