The Belgian Alec Segaert has won the twelfth stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia. The 23-year-old came out on top shortly before the chasers approached after 175 kilometres between Imperia and the town of Novi Ligure near Genoa. For the young pro, who attacked just three kilometres before the finish, it is one of his greatest successes. His compatriot Toon Aerts came second and the Uruguayan Guillermo Thomas Silva third.
The strong sprinters around Frenchman Paul Magnier and Italian Jonathan Milan had previously been left behind on the easy category three climbs and thus had no chance at the finish. No German made it into the top ten riders of the day.
Afonso Eulálio from Portugal slightly extended his lead in the overall standings. Thanks to bonuses, he is now 33 seconds ahead of two-time Danish Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard. Thymen Arensman from the Netherlands is third, 2:03 minutes behind Eulálio.
Friday's largely flat stage between Alessandria and Verbania on Lake Maggiore is also unlikely to see any shifts at the top of the general classification. As the last 30 of the 189 kilometres will be somewhat hilly with two small climbs, victory could come from an escape group or perhaps a bunch sprint. The tour ends on 31 May in Rome.
