Italian professional cyclist Alberto Bettiol has won the 13th stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia. The 32-year-old, who won the Tour of Flanders in 2019, celebrated his second victory overall in the Tour of Italy after a solo ride in Verbania on Lake Maggiore in the north of the country. He was already successful once in 2021.
The Norwegian Andreas Leknessund finished second after 189 kilometres from Alessandria, the Belgian Jasper Stuyven third. No German made it into the top ten riders.
The top riders in the race for the overall standings took it easy - and finished well behind the leading group. Afonso Eulálio is still in the lead. The Portuguese rider leads the classification ahead of two-time Danish Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard with a gap of just over 30 seconds.
There could be a shift in the overall standings on Saturday. After rather flatter days, the pros are in for a treat: the 14th stage is the first mountain stage in the Alps with a mountain arrival. Between Aosta and Pila there are three first category climbs and one each in the second and third category. The tour ends in Rome on 31 May.
