Chelm (dpa) - Professional cyclist Phil Bauhaus has won the opening stage of the 78th Tour of Poland.

After 216 kilometres from Lublin to Chelm, the 27-year-old from Bocholt on the Bahrain-Victorious team won the sprint on Monday ahead of the Colombian Alvaro Hodeg and the Frenchman Hugo Hofstetter. With his sixth win of the season, Bauhaus also took the overall lead in the seven-day WorldTour.

Meanwhile, the German Bora-hansgrohe team started the race with bad luck. Top sprinter Pascal Ackermann, who is moving to Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates team at the end of the season, came off his bike during the stage, weakened by a cold. His team-mate Marcus Burghardt crashed and also had to end the race prematurely. According to a statement from his team, initial reports suggest that the 38-year-old has a broken arm. An examination at the hospital should provide more precise information about Burghardt's injury.

The second stage on Tuesday will cover 200.8 kilometres from Zamość to Przemyśl. The race ends on Sunday in Krakow.
