Two years after finishing third in the Tour de France, Australian professional cyclist Richie Porte has announced the end of his career. The 37-year-old rider from the Ineos-Grenadiers team announced his retirement from competitive cycling on Twitter.
Porte, who is regarded as a tour specialist, has won the Paris-Nice long-distance race three times, the Tour Down Under in his home country twice, the Tour de Romandie, the Tour de Suisse and the Critérium du Dauphiné, the Tour de France dress rehearsal.
"I was lucky enough to travel the world by bike," wrote Porte. He could never have imagined this as a young boy from the island of Tasmania. Porte's last farewell as a professional racer was at the Tour of Britain.
