Frankfurt/Main (dpa) - Former European Championship medallist Marco Mathis is ending his career as a professional cyclist at the end of the year.

The 27-year-old from Meckenbeuren near Friedrichshafen had returned from the road to the track at the beginning of 2020 and had taken part in a large part of the Olympic preparation for the track four, but missed the Tokyo start due to the qualification rules.

"Not taking part was bitter. But it was clear to me beforehand that I would stop after Tokyo. I'm sticking to it," said Mathis. For the former Katusha and Cofidis pro and U-23 World Time Trial Champion (2016), the Omnium Championships in Frankfurt (Oder) in mid-December will be the end of his career. He won silver at the 2019 European Championships in the mixed time trial on the road.
