His name will be displayed on one of the bends on the climb up to Alpe d’Huez. But Tadej Pogacar achieved even more with his stage victory. The Slovenian has set a fabulous record.
Cycling star Tadej Pogacar set a new record with his stage victory at Alpe d’Huez. The Tour de France leader completed the 13.8-kilometre Alpine climb in 35:26 minutes, beating Marco Pantani’s time by 1:24 minutes. The Italian had climbed the mountain in 36:40 minutes in 1995, according to data provider Velon. This equated to an average speed of 23.3 km/h.
Remco Evenepoel, who finished second overall, had completed the 21 hairpin bends up to the ski resort in 37 minutes and 57 seconds. Only Pogacar, Pantani on three occasions, and Jan Ullrich in 1997 have ever been faster than the double Olympic champion from Belgium in an official race.
