Britain's Alex Dowsett has set a new world hour record in the Manchester velodrome. On 2 May, he beat the old record by 466 metres.

In September 2014, Jens Voigt set a new record for the UCI hour world record according to the rules that were changed in May 2014. However, it was beaten just six weeks later by the Austrian Matthias Brändle. In February 2015, Australian professional cyclist Rohan Dennis improved the existing record to 52.491 kilometres. Now another name has been added to the list of record holders: 26-year-old professional cyclist Alex Dowsett from Team Movistar. As cycling sponsor Canyon announced on its website, the Brit was almost 50 minutes behind Dennis' record time, at times by as much as ten seconds.

Alex Dowsett had originally planned the record attempt for the end of February, but had to cancel it due to a broken collarbone.

It remains to be seen how long Dowsett's record will stand: Former Tour de France overall winner and Olympic time trial champion Bradley Wiggins has announced an attempt for 7 June 2015.
