Former road cycling world champion Alejandro Valverde was hit by a car and slightly injured during training in Spain.
The accident happened on 2 July near the municipality of Alcantarilla in the region of Murcia in the east of the country, according to the authorities and the Movistar team.
Both Valverde and a training partner of the 42-year-old Spaniard, who was also hit by the car, were only slightly injured. The driver involved in the accident was a hit-and-run driver and has not yet been identified, it was reported.
Neither Valverde nor his team-mate suffered broken bones or other serious injuries, Movistar announced on Twitter. Both athletes are in good health.
To be on the safe side, Valverde will remain in hospital for 24 hours for observation. However, he will probably be discharged on Sunday. The circumstances of the accident are not yet known.
Valverde is also successful in his 21st professional year. He already achieved three successes in 2022. He now has a total of 133 victories. The Spaniard from Murcia wants to end his career at the end of the year.
