The Spanish Cycling Federation has made a prominent new addition to its coaching staff: Alejandro Valverde, one of the most successful professional cyclists of the past two decades, will take over as national coach for the men's national road cycling team with immediate effect.

The Spanish cycling federation Real Federación Española de Ciclismo (RFEC) officially announced the signing of the 44-year-old on 19 March 2025. Valverde signed a four-year contract and will be in charge of the Spanish team at the upcoming World Championships, European Championships and Olympic Games. The man from Murcia has an impressive track record: 2018 World Champion, seven-time World Championship medallist and ten times in the top ten at World Championships. The Spanish national team will now benefit from this experience.

Alejandro Valverde relies on experience and motivation

In his new role as national coach, Valverde wants to pass on his experience and knowledge to the best Spanish riders. The ex-professional was highly motivated at the official presentation: "I would like to thank the president and the board for their trust. I approach this task with great enthusiasm and will do everything I can to ensure that we can show what Spanish cycling is worth at the World Championship, which suits our riders very well," explained Valverde according to the RFEC.

José Vicioso, President of the RFEC, also commented favourably on Valverde's signing: "As the RFEC, we are very proud that one of the best cyclists in history is bringing all his knowledge and experience to our team and can inspire the new generation of cyclists that is currently developing. I am sure that this connection will bring great joy to our sport. There is no better leader for the Spanish national team than Alejandro," said Vicioso according to the RFEC. The association has high hopes for the collaboration with the former world-class rider.
