According to an official statement, the Swiss public prosecutor's office in Bischofszell has completed its investigation and has filed charges against Jan Ullrich with the District Court of Weinfelden for "wilful gross violation of traffic regulations and multiple wilful driving while qualified as unfit to drive".
The public prosecutor's office is demanding an 18-month prison sentence suspended for a probation period of four years. If Ullrich commits another serious traffic offence or criminal offence during this time, he will have to go to prison. He will also have to pay a fine of several thousand euros.
The indictment at the District Court of Weinfelden is in summary proceedings. This means that Jan Ullrich has admitted the alcohol-related accident and has agreed to recognise the civil claims of the accident victims. He also accepts the 18-month suspended prison sentence in order to shorten the proceedings. It is now up to the district court in Weinfelden to decide whether the sentence comes into force.
"The indictment was sent off today and will be with the court next week. The court can then decide whether the demand is appropriate or not. If it accepts the claim, the sentence will become legally binding," court spokesman Stefan Haffter told TOUR.
On 19 May 2014, shortly after 8 p.m., Jan Ullrich was driving from Happerswil towards Illighausen at excessive speed and - for the second time that day - under the influence of alcohol. At the K103/K105 junction in Mattwil/TG, he first collided with the rear of a vehicle parked at the junction and then head-on with an oncoming vehicle (TOUR reported).
