Roubaix (dpa) - One day after winning team sprint gold together, Lea Sophie Friedrich and Emma Hinze also got off to an excellent start in the individual sprint at the Track Cycling World Championships in Roubaix.

Friedrich set the fastest time in the Vélodrome in 10.489 seconds, while defending champion Hinze finished second in 10.519 seconds ahead of Canadian Kelsey Mitchell. Pauline Grabosch (10.572 seconds) also made it into the top eight in sixth place and saved herself an elimination round with her strong qualification. The decision on gold, silver and bronze, which will be made in knockout duels on the track, will be made on Friday evening.
