"I can't believe what I'm reading here. What a sad, sad day," wrote British pro Geraint Thomas on Twitter. Cycling superstars Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia and Belgian Wout van Aert also expressed their condolences on social media.
"We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional rider, Gino Mäder," said manager Milan Erzen of Team Bahrain-Victorious. The Giro d'Italia team tweeted: "Cycling is a big family. Today we are all crying for a special boy." German cyclist Simon Geschke wrote on Instagram: "We will never forget you, Gino."
Mäder fell on the descent from the Albula Pass to the destination of La Punt and plunged into a ravine. He subsequently had to be resuscitated. One day later, he succumbed to his serious injuries at the age of 26 at around 11.30 a.m., as his team announced.
Instead of the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse, the professionals were due to set off on a funeral ride from the actual finish in Oberwil-Lieli on Friday. Mäder's team announced its withdrawal from the preparatory race for the Tour de France.
