The 22-year-old defended the overall leader's red jersey on the 20th and penultimate stage of the 77th Tour of Spain on Saturday.
Before the final day, Eveneoel is 2:05 minutes ahead of his closest rival Enric Mas from Spain and 5:08 minutes ahead of his compatriot Juan Ayuso.
Evenepoel confidently fended off all of Mas' attacks on the difficult 181-kilometre mountain stage from Moralzarzal to Puerto de Navacerrada and finished sixth on the stage. The young Belgian shed tears of joy after crossing the finish line. The stage win went to Richard Carapaz from Ecuador. The Olympic champion from Tokyo thus secured the jersey of the best climber of the Vuelta ahead of time.
The final stage of the Tour of Spain leads over 97 kilometres from Las Rozas to the capital Madrid on Sunday.
