The Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team will have their work cut out for them in their Tour debut, trying to survive the madness
It is certainly no exaggeration to suggest that one of the reasons the Spanish-based Professional Team was invited to the Tour de France is that the Grand Départ takes place in Barcelona.

It is certainly no exaggeration to suggest that one of the reasons this Spanish-based professional team has been invited to the Tour de France is that the Grand Départ takes place in Barcelona. This means that, alongside Team Movistar, the Spanish colours will be represented for a second time. For such a young and inexperienced team, it will be hard enough to survive the extremely gruelling and fiercely contested Tour. To make any impression at all, their only option is to send riders into breakaway groups as often and as early as possible, or to get involved in the sprint finishes. The team has signed a trump card for this in the form of Fernando Gaviria – the 32-year-old is the only rider in the squad who has ever taken part in the Tour before. However, his heyday, with two stage wins in 2018, was a few years ago now.

As a student of German and political science, the flawless amateur sportsman once decided to try his luck as a journalist. His passion for racing bikes led him straight to the TOUR editorial team as an intern, which has since become an affair of the heart that has lasted more than 30 years, 16 of them as editor-in-chief. As a - in his own words - "generalist in the cycling niche", he is interested in all topics relating to road bikes (and gravel bikes) and is still particularly enthusiastic about racing today. Highlights of his own career as a racing cyclist include taking part in the TOUR-Transalp, the odd everyman race and regular Alpine tours with friends.
