The provincial capital of Innsbruck is the finish line for all twelve road and time trial competitions. All competitions finish on the Rennweg in front of the state theatre. The men's and women's team time trials will start in Area47 in Ötztal, the junior, junior women's, U23 and elite women's time trials in Wattens, while the elite men's race will start in Rattenberg. All road races, except for the junior women's race, start in Kufstein.
Road race with tough final laps in Innsbruck
From the start in Kufstein, the route runs for around 90 kilometres through the Inn Valley and over the climb to Gnadenwald to Innsbruck. After the first finish in Innsbruck, the 23.9-kilometre circuit follows via Aldrans, Lans and Igls - including a 7.9-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 5.7 per cent past Amras Castle and the Olympic ice channel below the Patscherkofel. This mountain has a maximum gradient of ten per cent. The lap around Innsbruck is ridden three times by the elite women and six times by the elite men. In the men's elite race, the final climb is 2.7 kilometres long and up to 25 per cent steep, the Höttinger Höll'. After a short descent past the Hungerburg, the route then leads three kilometres flat to the finish in front of the Hofburg and the Landestheater. "The brief was to design a course that would give the climbers and general classification riders of the major national tours the chance to fight for the rainbow jersey," explains the World Championship route planner, ex-professional Thomas Rohregger.
Elite time trials also go uphill
The elite men race 52.5 kilometres from Rattenberg to Innsbruck. On the way, there is a long climb from Fritzens to Gnadenwald. The U23 riders, juniors and elite women will contest their time trials from Wattens to Innsbruck over 28.5 kilometres, while the route for the juniors is 20.2 kilometres from the start in Wattens to the provincial capital. The men's and women's team time trials will start in Area47 in Ötztal and will cover 62.1 kilometres for the male pros and 53.8 kilometres for the women.
