In the big mountain finale, the peloton of the 109th Tour de France has to torture itself over more than 3000 metres in altitude over just 80 kilometres. The final Pyrenean stage, covering a total of 143.2 kilometres from the pilgrimage town of Lourdes up to the Hautacam ski station, begins with a flat 60 kilometres before two Tour legends really get down to business.
The 16.4 kilometre long Col d'Aubisque awaits first, followed by the 13.6 kilometre long climb to Hautacam. Both mountains belong to the highest category. In between, the Col de Spandelles still has to be conquered. The 10.3 kilometre climb belongs to the first category and is on the Tour programme for the first time. It was long considered impassable, but the Hautes-Pyrénées department has been working on making the descent safer.
