At the first mountain finish of the 109th Giro d'Italia in the Alps, cycling star Jonas Vingegaard took the overall leader's pink jersey. As expected, the previous leader Afonso Eulálio from Portugal was unable to follow on the final climb to the Pila ski resort in the Aosta Valley in the north of the country.
Vingegaard, the biggest favourite to win the Giro, now leads the overall standings by 2:26 minutes from Eulálio with around a week to go. The Dane has won the Tour de France twice in the past and the Spanish Vuelta last year. By winning the Giro, he would have triumphed in all three of cycling's grand tours.
The 29-year-old overtook the escapees five kilometres before the finish of the 14th stage and took the stage win after 133 kilometres with a total of three first-category climbs, 49 seconds ahead of Austrian Felix Gall and 58 seconds ahead of Australian Jai Hindley. It was Vingegaard's third stage win overall in this year's Tour of Italy.
On Sunday, there is likely to be a bunch sprint in Milan after a flat stage of 157 kilometres. The next rest day will follow on Monday before the tour ends in Rome on 31 May.
