Stefano Oldani has secured the second Italian victory in a row at the 105th Giro d'Italia.
The 24-year-old Alpecin-Fenix pro from Milan won the twelfth stage after 204 kilometres from Parma to Genoa in the sprint of a breakaway trio ahead of his compatriot Lorenzo Rota and the Dutchman Gijs Leemreize. The day before, Alberto Dainese had made the Tifosi cheer for the first time.
Everything remained the same at the top of the overall standings. Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez is still twelve seconds ahead of Olympic champion and former Giro champion Richard Carapaz from Ecuador. Emanuel Buchmann remains ninth, 1:09 minutes back. His Dutch team-mate Wilco Kelderman, who made up around eight minutes as a breakaway rider, moved up into a top 15 place and can once again hope for a top position in the final classification.
On Friday, the 13th stage covers 150 kilometres from Sanremo to Cunea inland. Apart from a third category mountain, there are no major difficulties to overcome. The Tour of Italy ends in Verona on 29 May.
