The 105th Giro d'Italia starts today in Budapest, Hungary. From a German perspective, Emanuel Buchmann is hoping for a top place in the second largest cycling tour in the world, which is extremely difficult with more than 51,000 metres of climbing. The Tour of Italy ends on 29 May in Verona.
Due to the detour to Hungary, the Giro starts on 6 May. After three days, the first rest day follows before the race continues in Sicily, where the first mountain finish on Mount Etna awaits on 10 May. The route has a total of five mountain finishes in store for the riders. The third week in particular will be extremely tough. There are also two time trials, on the second day in Budapest over 9.2 kilometres and on the final day in Verona over 17.1 kilometres
After two difficult years of crashes, illness and corona, Emanuel Buchmann wants to attack again. He has not yet given up his dream of a podium in a grand tour. In his Bora-hansgrohe team, however, he has to share the captain's role with Wilco Kelderman (Netherlands) and Jai Hindley (Australia).
Lennard Kämna wants to show himself in breakaway groups and win a stage like at the Tour de France 2020. Phil Bauhaus could play a role on the flat stages. The rider from Bocholt has already achieved several top placings this season, including a stage win at the WorldTour Tour Tirreno Adriatico.
There is no clear favourite for overall victory. The most likely candidate is former winner and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz from Ecuador. Britain's Simon Yates is also considered to have a good chance. Last year's winner Egan Bernal from Colombia is not yet ready after his serious crash in the winter. The two Slovenian stars Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic are focussing on the Tour de France.
