Giro in autumn - an adventurous scenario awaits the professional cyclists, because never before has the Giro crossed high Alpine passes in mid-October. The team presentation in Palermo on Thursday, 1 October, which was characterised by the obligation to wear masks and social distancing corridors, showed that the approaching second wave of coronavirus means that professional cycling is far from returning to normality. Nevertheless, organiser RCS and the participating 22 teams glad to be able to start at all. Only Eurosport is broadcasting on German-language TV - but the sports broadcaster is only showing the first nine stages on Eurosport 2 live. The free-to-air Eurosport 1 will not start live coverage until the 10th stage on 13 October.
The starting field for the 103rd edition of the Giro includes some prominent names, not least Gerraint Thomas (Ineos), who surprisingly was not in the British team's Tour de France squad. His compatriot Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), who was in the lead at the Giro two years ago until shortly before the finish, the Astana combo Fuglsang/López and Bora-Hansgrohe captain Rafal Majka will also be aiming for a top-five finish in the overall standings.
The sprinters' field is also strong with Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe), Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ), Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and Elia Viviani (Cofidis). With Marco Mathis (Cofidis), Nico Denz (Team Sunweb), Tony Martin and Christopher Pfingesten (with Jumbo-Visma) and Rick Zabel (Israel Start Up Nation), there are only five German pros at the start in Palermo. They are bolded in the following start list to make them easier to recognise.
