For the first time, a cycling world championship is being held on African soil. The title fights will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, for the coveted rainbow jerseys. The World Championships will reach their climax on Saturday and Sunday with the road races of the women's elite and the men's elite. TOUR will be reporting on both races in detail here in the live ticker.
The women's race on Saturday is already extremely demanding. The elite women face 3350 metres of climbing over 164.6 kilometres on a circuit that is completed eleven times, while the men have to complete 15 laps, plus an additional loop over Mont Kigali and the legendary Mur du Kigali with its cobblestones. The summit of the six-kilometre climb to Mont Kigali is at an altitude of 1771 metres, where the air is already getting thinner.
The search is on for the women's successor to Lotte Kopecky. The Belgian, world champion in 2023 and 2024, had broken her vertebrae at the Tour de l'Ardèche shortly before the World Championships, but had not planned to start at the World Championships beforehand. Therefore Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, winner of the Tour de France Femmes 2025, will be the woman to beat on Saturday. Find out who could be a threat to her and what Germany's chances are in the women's race in our Favourites preview under the microscope. You can find out who will ultimately prevail here in the World Cycling Championships 2025 live ticker.
On Sunday, it's the turn of the elite men with their road race. The course has 5475 metres of elevation gain over 267.5 kilometres. In comparison: in Zurich in 2024, there were 4470 metres of elevation gain over 273.9 kilometres and even the extremely difficult course in Innsbruck in 2018 "only" had 4670 metres of elevation gain over 258 kilometres.
In contrast to the women's race, the men's race will be contested by the defending champion: Tadej Pogačar will also be the top favourite in Kigali after his triumph in Zurich 2024. We have listed the candidates who could throw a spanner in the works for the Slovenian in his renewed assault on the rainbow jersey on Sunday in our Favourites preview listed for the 2025 World Cycling Championships.
In addition to our World Cycling Championships 2025 live ticker, the competitions can of course also be followed on television and via live stream. Eurosport and ZDF will be broadcasting the road cycling competitions in Rwanda live. The We have compiled transmission times in advance as a service here.
