Annemiek van Vleuten has broken her elbow in a fall at the World Championships in Wollongong, Australia. The 39-year-old announced this on the short message service Twitter with.
"Stable elbow fracture, no operation required. I can cycle, but that depends on the pain and has to be sensible. Hope I can sleep," wrote the Dutchwoman after being hospitalised for treatment. This means that the three-time world champion's start in the individual race on Saturday is questionable.
Van Vleuten was in the mixed team time trial crashed shortly after the start, apparently due to a technical defect. "I don't know what happened, but it looks like the tyre burst after I touched the side of the road. So that wasn't the problem. Something threw me off balance, but whatever caused it: It's not going to help or change my situation," tweeted the cycling star.
