Olympic champion René Wolff from Erfurt has to resign from his post as Dutch national coach of the track cycling sprinters after just one year.

The contract, which expires on 31 January 2023, will not be extended, the KNWU announced. "In view of the approaching European Championships and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, we are looking for a good solution in the short term," explained head coach Jan van Veen.

Wolff in office since February

Wolff took over as national coach for the second time on 1 February. The 44-year-old had already worked for the Dutch federation from the beginning of 2010 until the 2016 Olympic Games. The 2004 Olympic team sprint champion and 2005 sprint world champion then moved to the Dutch NOC before working as national coach in New Zealand from mid-2018 until the end of 2021. He resigned from his position there in December 2021.

The Dutch cycle sprinters have set the standard in the men's competition for years. Harrie Lavreysen won gold and bronze twice at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and is now an eleven-time world champion. Shanne Braspennincx was Olympic champion in the keirin.
