The future of French cycling seems secure for the time being: When Romain Bardet, Thibaut Pinot and Julian Alaphilippe retire, their successors may already be successful professionals. Currently, Romain Gregoire, European champion and runner-up in the junior world championships in 2021, stands out in particular.
Last season, he also put in strong performances as a rookie in the U23 class, winning the junior competition at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, stages at the Baby Giro and at the Tour de l'Avenir - and was promptly promoted from the junior team.
Together with his team-mate Lenny Martinez, he signed a professional contract with Groupama-FDJ for the new season. While Gregoire is regarded as a man for tough one-day classics, his strong, 52-kilo team-mate Martinez could be a promise for the high mountains and the Tour de France - if the 19-year-old son of Olympic mountain bike champion Miguel Martinez does not fail, like many of his predecessors, to fulfil the great expectations of the French to finally find a successor to the last compatriot to win the Tour. That was Bernard Hinault in 1985.
TOUR editor Andreas Kublik takes a look at ten young riders who will be worth watching in 2023. We present the individual candidates in our series. Almost all of the selected riders are already under contract with a World Tour team. Signing cyclists at a very young age is a trend that has recently caught on with the top teams.
Numerous youngsters skip the U23 class and go straight into the professional ranks. The most prominent example of this development is Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian was under contract with Deceuninck - Quick Step in 2019 at the age of just 18. Since then, he has worked his way up to the top of the world rankings, including becoming road world champion in 2022.
Many top teams also have their own junior racing team, where they train their talents and later bring them into the professional squad. A prime example of this is the Groupama-FDJ team in 2023, which has recruited all seven new riders for this year from the Equipe continentale Groupama-FDJ.
