The Italian website Calcio e Finanza, which is primarily concerned with the economic background of football, has compiled a list of the top earners in cycling for 2022. There is no official confirmation of the salaries. TOUR shows the 20 best-paid professional cyclists.
At the bottom of the ranking is Fernando Gaviria from UAE Team Emirates. The sprinter earns 1.8 million from the team from the Emirates. From next season, however, the Colombian will be riding for Movistar. It is not known how much he will earn there.
Adam Yates, in 14th place in the ranking of the best-paid professional cyclists (two million euros in earnings), is moving to Gaviria's current team and is likely to be well paid there too. With Alejandro Valverde and Vincenzo Nibali, there are also two riders in the top 20 who are ending their careers and will no longer be involved in the professional circuit in 2023.
Tadej Pogacar is at the top of the highest-paid professional cyclists in 2022. The Slovenian has already won the Tour de France twice and it is no coincidence that he is the rider with the highest salary. However, a look at the places behind him reveals that few of the stars who have shaped the 2022 season are among the top earners.
Jonas Vingegaard (winner of the Tour de France), Jai Hindley (winner of the Giro d'Italia), and Remco Evenepoel (winner of the Vuelta and Road World Champion) are not among the top 10 highest-paid professional cyclists in 2022. And even a superstar like Mathieu van der Poel comes off relatively badly with two million euros. It is not known whether Hindley, Vingegaard or Evenepoel, for example, have received a financial upgrade following their successes.
In contrast, Chris Froome and Peter Sagan continue to have very lucrative contracts, although their heyday is probably behind them. The two veteran stars are ranked second and third among the top earners.
