As a child, Vingegaard first tried his hand at football before moving on to cycling. However, it soon became clear that a career in football would not be enough. "I was so small that the others never gave me the ball," says the Dane. His father Claus, a salmon farm constructor, finally took the then ten-year-old Jonas to the Tour of Denmark, which started near Vingegaard's home. And he fell in love with cycling straight away.
Before Vingegaard became a full-time professional, he worked part-time in a fish factory for two years. He packed cod in the harbour from six to twelve o'clock and supervised the auction. He found time to train in the afternoon.

"I liked my time at the factory. It was fun, but physically it was extremely hard. But I didn't just work there for the money. I had to fill my day with something, do something other than cycling, as I wasn't training or travelling much at the time. At least I know that I would have found another job if I hadn't turned pro," said Vingegaard in a TOUR interview in 2022.
Vingegaard had his big breakthrough in 2021 with a stage win at the UAE Tour, 2nd place overall at the Tour of the Basque Country and 2nd place at the Tour de France. The Dane actually started the Tour of France as a helper for Primoz Roglic. But when the Slovenian captain of Jumbo-Visma retired early after a crash, Vingegaard stepped into the breach and surprised the fans with second place behind Tadej Pogacar.
It was a similar story in 2022: this time Roglic and Vingegaard were supposed to form a one-two, but the Slovenian dropped out again and Vingegaard took the yellow jersey on stage 11 after a breakaway by Pogacar, which he never relinquished until Paris.
Vingegaard has a daughter with his partner Trine Marie Hansen, nine years his senior, who was born in 2020. Hansen's mother Rosa Kildahl is a TV star in Denmark. She has appeared on the shows "Great Danish Bake Off" and the Danish version of "Dancing with the Stars" and has a own Youtube channel.
The Danish Tour de France winner also revealed who he admired as a child in the 2022 TOUR interview. "When I had just started cycling, I watched the Giro d'Italia and saw Riccardo Ricco win many stages. I liked him a lot. But he was soon banned for doping - I think three times in total (2008, 2012 and 2020; editor's note). So he's no longer an idol. What I like is the way Alberto Contador raced: always aggressive."
